The free brain boost parents overlook

Parents who want to support their children's development receive suggestions by the minute. Tutoring, learning apps, language courses, curated book lists, brain training. Behind all of it sits the assumption that cognitive growth comes from the right input. Something you buy, book, or fit into an already full calendar.

The scientific answer to this is unspectacular and uncomfortable. One of the most robust interventions costs nothing.

What the meta-analysis shows

Morales et al. published a systematic review in Pediatrics in 2024. 14 randomized controlled trials, 3,203 children, age range 5 to 14 years. The study design matters. These are not observational studies comparing active children with sedentary ones. They are genuine intervention studies capable of establishing causality.

The findings are clear:

  • General intelligence improved significantly. The mean IQ gain was 4 points (95% CI 1.44 to 6.64, p = 0.01).
  • Fluid intelligence — that is, the ability to solve problems and navigate new situations — also improved significantly (SMD = 0.20, p = 0.006).
  • The effect appeared regardless of baseline IQ. Both children in the typical range and children with borderline IQ benefited.
  • No single sport format was superior. Different types of movement, durations, and intensities all showed effects.

Four IQ points are not trivial

For context. An accompanying commentary in the same issue of Pediatrics places the effect in a comparative frame. Four IQ points correspond roughly to the difference associated with 12 months of breastfeeding versus less than one month. That is the magnitude of one of the best-supported early childhood interventions on record.

Points in this range change how quickly a child processes new information, handles unfamiliar tasks, and manages cognitive load in everyday school life. This is not statistical noise. It is a measurable difference in thinking capacity.

Why movement changes the brain

Physical activity works through several biological pathways simultaneously:

Increased blood flow to learning-relevant brain regions such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. More oxygen and nutrients reach the areas responsible for memory and decision-making.

Release of BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a growth factor that promotes synaptic plasticity. BDNF is, in a sense, the fertilizer for new neural connections.

Strengthening of neural connections involved in reasoning and problem-solving. Communication between different brain regions becomes more efficient.

These effects act on a brain in the most malleable phase of its life. What is established during childhood shapes cognitive capacity for decades.

What this means in practice

Consistency beats program design. The data show no winner among movement types. Club sports, cycling, the playground, martial arts, dance, climbing. Children who move regularly benefit. The most important training program is the one that actually gets maintained.

Academic performance follows different rules than IQ. Even if grades do not rise directly, the toolkit the child uses to learn improves. Better attention, faster information processing, more flexible thinking.

The only thing demonstrably ineffective is inactivity. While parents weigh different cognitive enrichment programs against each other, the most impactful intervention is often the simplest: get outside and move.

What we are getting at with SLOW

Movement is an instructive case for our approach. Holistic and precise.

Holistic means that movement does not act on a single outcome but on several at once. Cognition, sleep, mood, body composition, cardiovascular development, bone health, immunity. Children who are active build foundations for the whole of later life. One biomarker influences another. The system works as a network.

Precise means that movement does not have to remain a recommendation. It is measurable. Activity tracking, VO2max estimation, anthropometric trend curves, cognitive progress testing, sleep architecture. Collecting data means making change visible and staying the course.
